Introduction
Look out at your lawn on a hot July afternoon. If it is anything like most American lawns, it is drinking hundreds of gallons of water a week just to stay green, and in a lot of places, that water is getting harder to justify. Droughts are longer. Water bills are higher. Some cities now restrict or fine you for watering on the wrong day. And through it all, that patch of grass sits there doing almost nothing for you. You cannot eat it. Pollinators mostly ignore it. It just needs to be mowed, fed, and watered, forever.
There is a better way to use that space, and you do not need a landscaping degree or a big budget to get there. This book is about xeriscaping, a term that simply means landscaping designed to need very little water once it is established. Despite how it sounds, it does not mean rock yards and cactus. Done well, a xeriscape can be lush, colorful, and full of birds and butterflies. It just uses plants and layouts that are matched to your actual climate, instead of fighting it.

Chapter 1: Know Your Yard Before You Touch It
Before you kill a single blade of grass, put the shovel down. The biggest mistake beginners make with drought-tolerant landscaping is copying a photo they saw online, a gravel-and-cactus scene from a magazine, and planting it in a yard that has nothing in common with the picture. Your yard has its own sun, soil, slope, and water habits. A plan that ignores those things will fight you for years. A plan built around them will practically take care of itself.
This chapter is about becoming a careful observer of your own property. Nothing here costs money. You just need a notepad, a shovel, and a few days of paying attention.
Reading the Sun
Sun exposure is the single biggest factor in what will thrive in any given spot, so start there.
Over the course of one day, walk outside every couple of hours (morning, midday, and late afternoon work well) and note which parts of your yard are lit up and which are shaded. Sketch a rough outline of your yard on paper and shade in the areas that are dark at each check-in. After a full day you will have a simple map with three kinds of zones:
- Full sun: gets six or more hours of direct light a day. Most drought-tolerant plants actually prefer this. They evolved in open, exposed landscapes.
- Part shade: gets three to six hours of direct sun, often dappled under a tree or blocked part of the day by a fence or the house.
- Full shade: gets less than three hours of direct sun. This is common under dense trees or on the north side of a house in the Northern Hemisphere.
One day of observation is a good start, but sun patterns shift with the seasons. A spot that is full sun in July, when the sun sits high overhead, might be shaded most of the day in November once the sun angle drops and a nearby tree's bare branches still block less light than you'd expect, or a deciduous tree that had leaves in summer suddenly opens up in winter. If you have time, do a second sun check in a different season before finalizing your plant list in Chapter 3. If you don't, at least note which trees on your property lose their leaves in winter and which stay green year-round, since that alone tells you a lot about how a spot's light will change.
Reading the Soil, the Slope, and the Water
The jar test. Your soil type determines how fast water drains, how much it holds onto for your plants to use, and even how you'll approach the sheet mulching process in Chapter 2. The simplest way to find out what you have is a jar test.
Dig a small hole about six inches deep in a spot that represents your yard (avoid spots right next to concrete or a garden bed that's been heavily amended). Fill a clear jar about one-third full with that soil, breaking up any clumps. Add water until the jar is nearly full, screw on a lid, and shake it hard for about a minute. Then set it down and leave it alone.
Sand settles first, usually within a minute. Silt settles next, over the following few hours. Clay is the finest particle and can take a full day or more to settle, often leaving the water above it slightly cloudy even after everything else has dropped. When it's done settling, you'll see distinct layers, and the relative thickness of each tells you your soil type:
- Mostly sand: drains fast, holds little water, warms up quickly in spring.
- Mostly clay: drains slowly, holds water (and can stay soggy), and is dense and hard to dig when dry.
- Mostly silt: drains at a moderate pace and feels smooth, almost slippery, when wet.
- A balanced mix of all three: this is called loam, and it's the easiest soil to work with, though even loam benefits from the organic matter you'll add during sheet mulching.
None of these are a dealbreaker. Drought-tolerant plants are chosen in Chapter 3 partly based on your soil type, so this test simply tells you which plants will feel at home versus which ones you'll need to skip or amend for.
Slope and drainage. Stand back and look at your yard's overall shape. Is it flat, or does it tilt toward the house, the street, or a fence line? Water always follows gravity, so a slope tells you where runoff will end up.
The best time to study this is during or right after a real rainstorm. Walk the yard (in boots, not bare feet) and watch where water pools and sits, where it runs in visible little streams across the surface (this is called sheeting), and where it seems to vanish quickly into the ground. Mark these spots on your sketch. Pooling spots are often low points with compacted or clay-heavy soil; they can become natural catch basins for a rain garden later, or they can be problem areas that need better drainage before you plant anything sensitive there. Sheeting spots show you where water is leaving your property fast without ever soaking in, which is exactly the kind of water you'll want to slow down and capture once you get to Chapter 6.
What to Keep, What to Remove, and Drawing Your Base Map
Walk your yard one more time with fresh eyes and make two lists: features worth keeping and features to remove.
Mature trees are almost always worth keeping. They provide shade that will lower your water needs for everything planted beneath them, and a large tree took years to establish a root system you don't want to disturb. Established shrubs that already look healthy and are appropriately sized are also often worth working around rather than ripping out, even if they are not native. Existing hardscape (a patio, a path, a retaining wall) is usually worth keeping too, since hardscape uses zero water and can be reused as part of your new design.
On the removal list, put anything that is purely lawn, struggling and chronically thirsty plants that need constant babying to survive, and any invasive species you can identify (a quick search of your state's extension office website, or an app like iNaturalist, can help confirm invasives if you're not sure).
