Chapter 1: What Inflammation Actually Is (and Isn't)
A splinter works its way into your thumb. Within minutes, the skin around it turns pink, then puffs up, then starts to throb. That reaction is inflammation, and it is your immune system doing exactly what it should. Instead of a single, visible flare that resolves, chronic inflammation is a low-grade immune response that keeps running in the background for months or years, often without any obvious symptom at all. There is no swollen ankle to point to. Your immune cells stay mildly activated, releasing a steady trickle of inflammatory chemicals throughout the body, even though there is no injury or infection actively being fought. Researchers sometimes describe this as the immune system's alarm system getting stuck in the "on" position at a low volume, quiet enough that you don't notice it, but persistent enough to matter over time.

Where a Blood Test Fits In
Because chronic inflammation rarely announces itself with a symptom, doctors sometimes use a blood test to get a rough read on it. The most common one measures C-reactive protein, a substance the liver produces in larger amounts when inflammation is present somewhere in the body. A CRP test gives a single number, and higher levels generally correlate with more inflammatory activity.
Here's where people tend to overinterpret the result. CRP tells you inflammation is present somewhere, but it cannot tell a doctor where it's coming from: a lingering cold, a dental issue, extra body fat, an autoimmune condition, or something else entirely. Two people with identical CRP numbers could have completely different things going on. That's why doctors use it alongside other information, such as symptoms, medical history, and sometimes additional testing, rather than treating it as a standalone verdict. Feeling Inflamed vs. Measuring Inflammation

Others feel puffy, achy, or foggy and assume that means their inflammation levels must be high, when the actual driver might be poor sleep, dehydration, stress, or an unrelated health issue.
